You might be wondering if eco-friendly tableware is just as durable as their plastic counterparts. They certainly are, so let’s break it down for you!

Sugarcane Tableware

Sugarcane (sometimes referred to as bagasse products) is growing in popularity as an excellent eco-friendly tableware option that looks very much like plastic plates. A byproduct of sugarcane stalks after harvest, bagasse mulch is formed after the juice has been removed from the sugarcane. The mulch is then heat pressed into the desired product shape using a high heat and pressure process.

A key benefit of this product is that it’s using the mulch that would otherwise be regarded as waste. Other features of sugarcane tableware include enhanced durability compared to paper, plastic or polystyrene products, are cut resistant and can withstand heat. They’re also 100% compostable - you can simply tear them up and spread them around your garden soil and essentially give them back to the earth! Plus, they’re more environmentally friendly and efficient to produce than paper products. Great for your party, great for the environment. It’s win-win.

Palm Leaf Tableware

Tableware made from palm leaf is also emerging in popularity. Found in desert and tropical regions, palm trees maintain their leaves all year round and then naturally shed their leaves as often as every few weeks. The palm leaves are then collected, cleaned without the use of chemicals to maintain the integrity of the leaves. They are then left to air dry, then stretched and flattened. Hand presses are then used to mould the leaves into the desired plate shape and then they are left to dry again. Palm leaf plates are 100% organic and a great alternative to paper products as the collection of palm leaves ensures the trees remain untouched unlike paper which often leads to deforestation.

Palm leaf plates also boast some great qualities. They’re hard to puncture or rip, and are microwavable. They can just as easily handle cold food such as ice cream as they’re moisture resistant and won’t go soggy. Best of all, instead of disposing of your palm tree plates, they can safely be used alongside kindling in a fireplace or if you have a garden, you can tear them and spread them around to enrich your soil, just like compost.
